Haydn: Symphony No. 99 in E-flat Major

Description:
Who doesn't like a good joke? Haydn certainly did. In his Symphony No. 98, he took an instrument that had always had a rudimentary role in the orchestra (the harpsichord) and parked it out in front as the soloist. But instead of being heard throughout the symphony like any other solo player, it just sat there silently until the final movement when it was given twelve glorious measures to play all to itself. It's a Jack-in-the-Box moment that also reflects the joy and tenderness of the late symphonies of Haydn. Conductor/keyboardist Jeffrey Kahane winds the crank and pops the top off of this piece as he leads the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in this week's SymphonyCast.
