Delius: A Song of Summer
Tippett: Triple Concerto
Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 5

In World War II, England was under siege. Hitler’s bombs were setting entire blocks of London on fire and the Germans seemed poised for an invasion. But at this same time Ralph Vaughan Williams came out with his Symphony No. 5, music that stood in stark contrast to the agony outside the hall. Here was such beauty that for a moment at least, England caught a vision of peace and of better days to come. Londoners who were there still talk about it. And they flocked to this most recent performance at the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra led by Sir Andrew Davis.
