Brahms: Symphony #4
Brahms: Symphony #2
For many artists there is an unpleasant little phenomenon called the Sophomore Jinx. They make a big splash right out of the chute, but when it comes time to produce their next piece, they choke. One artist who had perhaps the most famous case ever of the Freshman Jinx was Johannes Brahms. For years he could not bring himself to finish his first symphony. But when it came out and people loved it, his second symphony took only three months to write – no one more surprised than the composer himself. This week’s episode is the second a two-part series featuring Christoph von Dohnányi and the LA Philharmonic performing all four of the Brahms symphonies.
