Brahms: Symphony #1
Brahms: Symphony #3
That poor man: Johannes Brahms took 15 years to finish a piece of music that lasts about 45 minutes. He burned pages and pages of his own work, trying to get it just right, and was terrified that posterity would look at him and wonder, "Why did he write this?” Of course, nobody said that following in the footsteps of Beethoven would be easy. This week’s episode begins a two-part series featuring Christoph von Dohnányi and the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing all four of the Brahms symphonies.
