Program:
BERNSTEIN: Symphony No. 1
BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 9

Description:
Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 was harder than anything the performers of that time, particularly the singers, had ever seen. “Fast, high and loud” is how singers today still describe its vocal parts. And then there is probably one of the most famous stories about Beethoven, the conductor: shrouded in deafness, he had to be turned by one of the performers onstage at the premiere of the Ninth to realize that the crowd behind him was going nuts. Now, almost 200 years later, crowds still flock to hear it. This week, Franz Welser-Möst leads the Cleveland Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 from Miami, Florida.
